The eleventh edition of the Sonic Acts Festival will be held from Thursday 23rd to Sunday 26th February 2006 in Paradiso and De Balie in Amsterdam. Entitled Sonic Acts XI — The Anthology of Computer Art, the festival will include a three-day international conference, three evenings and nights of live performances, an extensive film programme and an exhibition. A DVD and a book on the festival theme will also be published to coincide with it.

Autonomous computer art has seen a revival in recent years. Partly due to the rapid advances in hardware and software, over the last fifteen years applied and autonomous computer art has flourished in the visual arts and electronic music as well as in the worlds of film, video and games. As hardware and software have become more accessible and user-friendly a large group of artists has taken possession of this domain and developed a great deal of new work. In addition, ever more artists are developing their own hardware and writing their own software. This is an essential element in contemporary computer art.
The three-day conference will provide a multifaceted and penetrating overview of computer art. International speakers from computer arts, film, the fine arts, music, the academic world, literature and art history will, from the perspective of their own background, discuss the historical developments and present position of computer art, and consider its future. The speakers include Jasia Reichardt (GB), writer and curator, who made history in 1968 with the exhibit Cybernetic Serendipity; Lillian Schwartz (USA), pioneer in the field of computer-generated art and computer films; Curtis Roads (USA), composer and author of the influential Computer Music Tutorial; Stephen Wilson (USA), Professor of conceptual design at the SFSU and author of the authoritative Information Arts, Intersections of Art, Science, and Technology.

Desde hace más de cincuenta años, el «mundo real» (en contraste con el universo instrumental) viene empleándose para la creación sonora como fuente de material de partida. En un principio, esto es consecuencia de la posibilidad técnica de grabar toda clase de sonidos, pero de una forma mucho más relevante parece resultado de la concepción de las grabaciones como material con entidad propia en su ámbito generador de posibilidades sónicas, tanto originales como transformadas, reales y virtuales.

La socialización de la tecnología de grabación portátil (desde los años cincuenta hasta la actualidad) ha pasado por varias etapas que han tenido un impacto determinante en la concepción de la creación sonora, así como en la popularización de una práctica exploratoria de ese «mundo real», que en la actualidad implica a miles de personas en todo el mundo.
En este programa, Francisco López ha invitado para la realización de conciertos y presentaciones de su trabajo a cuatro jóvenes artistas sonoros prácticamente desconocidos, que nunca han actuado en España y que realizan un trabajo de excepcional dedicación, tan esmerado como personal en la exploración del mundo real como fuente de material creativo: Yannick Dauby (Francia), Andrey Kiritchenko (Ucrania), Ronnie Sundin (Suecia) y Aernoudt Jacobs (Bélgica). El programa consta además de un curso intensivo que imparte Francisco López sobre «El mundo como instrumento», centrado en aspectos históricos, sociológicos y filosóficos, que finaliza con un concierto de su «Trilogía de América», con materiales de Costa Rica, Nueva York y Patagonia.

The Subtropics Experimental Music & Sound Arts Festival turns 18 this year
and continues its mission to open our ears to new sounds. Headquartered
again at Dorsch Gallery in Miami’s Wynwood District and hosted for a night
by ArtCenter/South Florida and Miami Beach Cinematheque in Miami Beach,
Subtropics will offer a daily dose of new and experimental music and sound
works from an international collection of composers and performers.
Subtropics is the largest and oldest festival of its kind in the region and
one of South Florida’s true Cultural treasures.
ST-18, presented by SFCA’s interdisciplinary Sound Arts Workshop in
partnership once again with the Miami Performing Arts Center, concentrates a
wide array of events into a ten-day period, from February 23rd to March 3rd,
2005. At once a world-class exposition of new music and sound art and a
venue for an exchange of ideas between local, national, and international
artists, Subtropics creates a public dialogue along with engaging
entertainment unique to Miami and most parts of the world.
Can bio-acoustician David Dunn talk to the animals? Not exactly, but after
experiencing his performance on opening night of the Subtropics Festival,
the possibility may seem closer than you think. Come listen for this and
other near-superpowers as Dunn engages the audience and the environment with
simultaneous performances of In Air, In Water, In Earth, In Trees and Three
Strange Attractors. Just before that, experience an opening performance of
Alvin Lucier’s sound installation Music on a Long Thin Wire and get ready to
dodge hypersonic sound beams in Gustavo Matamoros and Charles Recher’s
Hypersonic Test: Florida I.
Can Gino Robair play a concert on anything, anywhere, in any situation? This
amazing percussionist, who has recorded with Tom Waits and Derek Bailey and
performed with the likes of John Zorn and Japanese turntablist Otomo
Yoshihide, attempts to do just that as he appears in residency during the
Subtropics Festival. He will make appearances in street theatre
improvisations on Lincoln Road and as part of the Zoo Band, which also
features the ingenious digital drawings of Portugal’s Jorge Gonçalves.
Robair’s residency will culminate with the Miami premiere of his
experimental real-time opera I, Norton, as he conducts a performance by
members of the FIU New Music Ensemble.
Subtropics’ reach extends to the airwaves this year with Eugenia Vargas and
Odalis Valdivieso’s Talking Head Transmitters, a low frequency AM radio
station broadcasting to cars and passersby in Miami Beach. In other festival
highlights, New Zealand’s David Watson makes us reconsider the bagpipes,
guitar virtuoso Seth Josel presents an evening of art music for acoustic and
electric guitar, Ben Manley explores the acoustics of everyday objects, and
NODUS treats us to solo and chamber music for the 21st century, plus, Miami
mavericks Edward Bobb, Phoenecia and Dino Felipe. Sound and image come
together in screenings of Visual Music and We Jam Econo: The Story of the
Minutemen. Everything draws to a conclusion on March 4 with a celebration of
the Subtropics Marathon’s 18th birthday, featuring a variety of performers
from Miami and around the world.
To satisfy your belly along with your ears, Subtropics Barbecue is available
for purchase at all Dorsch Gallery events. Miami artist Alex Steneck will be
donning his alternate “Playa-Personality” to bring gourmet BBQ to festival
attendees. Bring your appetite! Drinks and refreshments will top off this
aural and culinary experience that’s not to be missed.
Subtropics 18 will be held from February 23 - March 4, 2005. The
experimental music & sound arts festival will be held at Dorsch Gallery

El percusionista suizo Gunter Muller es considerado como uno de los pioneros y principales representantes de la improvisación electroacústica de los últimos años. Nacido en Munchen en 1954, viene desarrollando desde hace mas de 20 años un lenguaje peculiar basado en la amplificación y procesamiento electrónico de su reducido set de percusión. En los ultimos años sus materiales se han centrado aún mas en el trabajo con la electrónica y el procesamiento en vivo. Es uno de los músicos mas reconocidos de la escena de la vanguardia electrónica europea y ha grabado más de 60 discos junto a musicos como Jim O´Rourke, Christian Marclay, Otomo Yoshihide, Voice Crack y otros. Es ademas fundador del sello For 4 ears, el cual se reconoce junto al sello norteamericano Erstwhile, como uno de los difusores principales de la nueva improvisación electroacústica.

Este proyecto plantea un recorrido por las interconexiones entre el arte, la ciencia, la tecnología y la sociedad. Transita por espacios permeables que propician interferencias productivas entre imaginarios, conceptos y prácticas diversas. En su conjunto propone una mirada transdisciplinar, entendida como un modo de interpretación, exploración y participación en la compleja trama de relaciones que articula la cultura contemporánea. Digital Transit es así un espacio de comunicación que conecta las actuales tecnologías de la informática y las telecomunicaciones con las artes visuales, sonoras y escénicas, la arquitectura y el urbanismo, la ciencia, la educación, la participación ciudadana y el medio ambiente.
Digital Transit describe un entorno hilvanado por procesos y proyectos que transcurren a distintas escalas y en diferentes contextos: sea en un cultivo bacteriano, un cuerpo humano, un tejido urbano, una red de telecomunicaciones o un ecosistema. Se propone así una visión sistémica y global que circula desde la genética al urbanismo o de la informática a la educación, pasando por las nuevas comunidades digitales que se articulan en la red.

De nombre Salvatore Benintende, este joven grafista e ilustrador italiano, ha trabajado como freelance para compañías como Hp, Telecom o Ipod y ha publicado su obra en revistes de todo el mundo. A pesar de todo, su pasión sigue siendo la misma de siempre: el arte en la calle. 'No Street' es su primera exposición personal en Barcelona i refleja la dicotomía entre el arte y el grafismo, la obra dentro y fuera de la galería.
